Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most often before a first consultation.

Q1.Does Lelaiwa only handle overseas IVF? Is there any service at home?

Our core work is overseas fertility consulting and treatment coordination, with partner institutions in the United States, Thailand, Georgia, Malaysia and other destinations. We also have offices in major cities in China, including Beijing and Shanghai, so the early-stage work — baseline testing, stimulation monitoring, sharing reports and aligning the protocol — can be completed locally. In other words, you do not have to travel abroad on day one.

To be clear: all diagnosis and treatment are carried out by licensed medical institutions and their attending physicians. What we provide is information consulting, process coordination and travel support.

Q2.What is the success rate of third-generation IVF (PGT)?

Success depends on many factors at once — age, ovarian reserve, embryo quality, uterine condition and previous medical history — and the difference between individuals is large. We do not promise any treatment outcome and we do not offer any "guaranteed success" package.

PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) is used to screen embryos for chromosomal and genetic conditions so that the physician can select which embryo to transfer. It is not the same thing as a successful pregnancy.

Your own situation can only be judged by a licensed physician after your tests and an in-person consultation. Please be sceptical of any advertising that quotes a fixed success rate, guarantees pregnancy, or promises you will take home a baby.

Q3.How long can frozen eggs be stored? Can they still be used after thawing?

After vitrification, eggs are stored in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C. At that temperature cellular metabolism essentially stops, so in principle storage can be long term.

How many years are actually permitted is set by the storing institution's protocols and by local regulation, and those rules differ between countries. The terms you sign with your clinic and the local rules are what govern your case.

Thawed eggs can be fertilised. Survival on thaw relates to the quality of the egg at the time of freezing and to laboratory conditions, and again varies between individuals — your physician will explain the actual result at the time of thawing.

Q4.How do I know which pathway is right for me?

Usually you start with a baseline fertility assessment. Common items include the six-item hormone panel, AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone), an antral follicle count by transvaginal ultrasound, and a semen analysis for the male partner. The physician then weighs these against your age, medical history and any previous treatment.

You can send us the test reports you already have. We will help organise them and arrange an initial conversation so that you understand what each marker means.

Which pathway is finally appropriate remains the call of the attending physician after an in-person consultation.

Q5.What makes up the cost of overseas IVF? Roughly how much is it?

Cost usually has four parts:

(1) Medical fees — baseline testing, stimulation medication, egg retrieval and transfer procedures, laboratory work such as ICSI and PGT, plus embryo freezing and storage.

(2) Third-party costs, if your plan involves donor sperm, donor eggs or a gestational carrier.

(3) Service fees — consulting, protocol coordination, medical interpreting and travel arrangements.

(4) Travel and living costs — flights, accommodation, local transport and meals.

The mix differs a lot between countries and between plans, so once your assessment is finished we give you a written, itemised breakdown for your actual protocol, with no hidden charges. For concrete figures please speak to your advisor — we quote against your real plan.

Q6.Once I sign, who decides the treatment protocol?

The protocol is decided by the attending physician based on your test results and physical condition.

Our role is information consulting, explaining the protocol, coordinating the process and arranging travel. We never substitute ourselves for the physician's medical judgement.

If the physicians at home and abroad disagree, we help arrange a joint consultation and pass both opinions on to you in full and without spin. The final decision stays with you and your doctor.

Q7.How long does one overseas IVF cycle take? How much leave do I need?

It varies by person, and by whether the plan needs two trips.

The usual rhythm: baseline testing can be done at home; stimulation runs for roughly 9–12 days; time abroad covers monitoring, retrieval or transfer and post-procedure observation, in most cases somewhere around two to four weeks.

If you use a staged plan — retrieval first, frozen embryo transfer later — that becomes two shorter trips instead of one long one.

We work backwards from your work schedule to compress the time you need to spend abroad as much as we can. The above is a reference for typical cases only; your physician's plan is what governs.

Q8.What do I need to prepare before leaving?

Four categories, usually:

1. Baseline test reports — the hormone panel, AMH, transvaginal ultrasound, semen analysis. Some of these have a validity window.

2. Documents — passport and visa. Some destinations also ask for proof of marital status or relationship.

3. Previous medical records, surgical notes and medication history.

4. A list of allergies and of any medication you are currently taking.

You will get an itemised checklist for your specific destination during the protocol discussion. We help check validity dates, arrange translation, and flag which tests need repeating.

Q9.Which fertility services does Lelaiwa provide?

Overseas IVF consulting and protocol coordination; fertility preservation (egg and sperm freezing); support for single-parent family building; family-building planning for LGBTQ+ people; IVF for couples; information consulting around PGT; and the supporting services around all of it — medical interpreting, travel and accommodation, on-site accompaniment and post-treatment follow-up.

Again: every act of diagnosis and treatment is performed by a licensed partner medical institution and its attending physicians.

Q10.What is your core advantage compared with other IVF service agencies?

Five things, mainly:

1. Home and abroad as one process — baseline testing and stimulation can be done at home, cutting unnecessary time overseas.

2. Joint consultations between Chinese and overseas physicians, with reports shared in both directions and the protocol confirmed by both sides, which narrows the information gap.

3. Transparent process and cost — you get the itemised quote and the itinerary confirmed in writing in advance.

4. Coverage of the whole cycle — assessment, protocol, travel and post-treatment follow-up, with a named person tracking it throughout.

5. Several countries to compare — we can look across the United States, Thailand, Georgia and elsewhere against your actual situation rather than pushing a single institution.
